The Big White Fire Department Work Experience Program has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was also the best step I could have taken to further myself in the “long-road” to becoming a career firefighter. Living and working in the Big White Fire Hall has matured me as a person and I have developed friendships that will last a lifetime. Coming from a city where there was no opportunity to volunteer and gain valuable firefighting experience, the Work Experience Program in Big White, British Columbia was the best opportunity. It was also an honour to wear the Maltese cross and provide exceptional service within the Big White community.
During my time in Big White I flew across the country on numerous occasions applying to firefighting jobs, writing tests, interviews and that was a “life experience” in itself. The Work Experience Program has allowed me to gain experience in responding to emergency calls, initial size up, establishing command, driving and operating fire apparatus, medical calls, auto extrication, live burns, salvage, overhaul, and daily station duties which include equipment and apparatus checks. Through these experiences and others, I have developed an excellent understanding of what it takes to be a career firefighter. The paid-on-call members of Big White are a dedicated and hard working team, who were all great people to work with. Everyone has been so friendly and generous since the day I moved in.
The Experience I had in the 10-month Program was amazing and one that went above and beyond my expectations. It was an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget and I would like to thank all the members of the Big White Fire Department and their families and the members of the Big White community for all your help and advice it was much appreciated. Thank you once again for allowing me to participate in your OUTSTANDING program and for all your patience and guidance. You were incredible in helping me get closer to my goal!
