Being a member of the Big White Fire Department’s Work Experience program was an amazing learning and growing experience. It not only allowed me to apply the knowledge and training I gained through college into real life emergency situations, but gave me the opportunity to extend my knowledge base as a firefighter with countless training courses and seminars.
The nine months I spent in Big White gave me the chance to see what it takes to become a full-time firefighter. I worked regular shifts, consisting of stations duties, equipment checks, training, and responding to all emergency calls. The officers gave me specialized training and information sessions directly related to preparing myself for a career in the fire service, including resume tips and interview preparation.
The program gave me a new home for nine months as well as a new family. The community of Big White welcomed me into their lives, and made me feel right at home. It did not take long for the six of us living together in the fire hall to develop a special bond together that surely we will never forget. The guidance, support and friendships of Chief McCleary, Deputy Svendsen, WEP crew, the rest of the department, and community have greatly contributed to my growth and improvement as a person.
Overall, I believe the WEP is an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to take the next step towards becoming a career firefighter, and wants to have a great life experience while doing it.
