Testimonials

CRAIG PEARCE – WEP 3 Fire Fighter – Hired with West Vancouver Fire Rescue
Back to Testimonials

Personally, taking part in the Big White Work Experience Program was one of the most valuable steps in my pursuit of a career in Fire Fighting.  It is my belief that any serious recruit consider this program.

Before beginning the WEP 3 program, I was in the same position as many recruit firefighters.  I had gone to the academy, taken extra courses, and pursued every job opening around.  With a strong theoretical knowledge of the Fire Service, and fire operations, I felt suited as a good candidate.  With lack of opportunity to volunteer in my local area, actual experience was what my resume was missing.

The Work Experience Program drives individuals to succeed in getting hired. The Program is designed to maintain your key skills, as well as build new ones.  There are plenty of opportunities to take courses, and further yourself in the Fire Service (I received 11 new certificates during the duration of the Program).  On top of all that, I got necessary experience around the trucks, and on calls.

I believe the most valuable part of the entire WEP program, is the interaction with your fellow firefighters, and the management staff.  I learned priceless lessons on the job which cannot be overlooked.  And industry involvement is highly looked upon with any department hiring process.

Being in the company of a highly supportive management staff, interacting with other equally driven recruits created the perfect environment for one to grow within the Fire Service.  It is this growth which I believe has got me where I am today.  During my probation as a firefighter with the District of West Vancouver, I find myself thinking of things I learned in Big White on a daily basis as well as relying on the skills that I have studied and practiced over and over thanks to the opportunities in Big White.

I appreciate all the help and support of the Chief’s, Captain, and the other firefighters and cannot thank each one of them enough!

Cheers, and Good Luck,
Craig Pearce
